Hello!

Welcome to the Building Strong Foundations website and blog.

Eleven years ago, God started to heal my heart from a deep hurt and the shame I’d carried for twenty years as the result of an abusive dating relationship in high school.

As God healed me, I felt Him call me to write a book to help others understand the subtle ways unhealthy and abusive relationships begin and then grow.

I spent months at the kitchen counter as I wrote and researched information for the book, It Doesn’t Start with a Punch: My Journey through an Abusive Teen Dating Relationship. Often, I paced as I prayed, Jesus let the words coming from my fingertips be yours. The book was published in September 2022.

This site and blog are a similar journey. A means to not just be aware of and hopefully recognize a potentially harmful relationship, but also to explore healthy habits, character traits and relationships.

While it’s important to cultivate and seek characteristics such as honesty, compassion, respect, trust, kindness and good communication, I truly believe the most important foundation comes from the one we build in God, Christ Jesus and the Holy Spirit.

The world is hard. It can be complicated to navigate. Challenges and difficult situations or relationships, especially for a child or youth learning who they are, can breed insecurity and self-doubt. When facing my own challenges, I often find strength in reminding myself I’m a child of God.

At the bottom of this post are a few passages from the Bible to remind us we are His children and the foundation He calls us to.

I hope you’ll journey with me as we explore ways to build strong foundations in our kids and ourselves, how to identify healthy and unhealthy relationships, healing, positive self-talk, hear from guest writers and so much more.

God’s Grace and Peace to you.

See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! 1 John 3

The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. Romans 8:16

So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith Galatians 3:26

"Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock." Matthew 7:24-25
